The civil rights were made with a single problem in mind; the unequal treatment of African Americans by the government and private persons.Saying that African Americans were property with no rights that the white man had to respect.

Abolitionists-a person who advocated or supported the abolition of slavery in the U.S.

Segregate- separate or set apart from others or from the main body or group.

NAACP-National association for the advancement of colored people.

Civil rights- is the guarantee that similarly situated persons will be treated equally under the law.

Major Events: in 1951 a man named Oliver Brown went to court against the Board of education. He was rejected to enroll his daughter into a white school. The NAACP helped out with the case. They used evidence from the 14th amendment which says "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." which means that everyone should be treated equally because of their citizenship. Segregation was becoming a problem in schools, and now the court could not ignore this any longer.


Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.

I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.

It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important.

Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

African American suffrage
African Americans were some of the first non native American people to set foot on this land yet they were the last people to gain voting rights. Some free black males did gain the right to vote, but it was often taken away from them. The only states that allowed free black men to vote were Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, And Vermont. New also allowed free blacks to vote, but they had to have a property qualification of $250 and a three year residence.

Howard University: Howard University has had a huge impacted on African Education. President Andrew Johnson approved Howard University on March 2, 1867. On November 9, 1868 classes began, there were 7 black student and 1 white student. there was 5 teachers 1 of them were black. His name was Dr. Augustas he was he very first African to serve as a medical school teacher in the country.
